What impressed me most about Fonty are the following three features:

1. The program is organized in a thoughtful and practical manner that reflects the best experience of field testing. It allows the student to progress in a manner that reflects the natural acquisition of language and does this not only systematically, but thoroughly. For each group of vowel and consonants, the system repeats itself, thus working from the known to the less familiar in a friendly manner. Breaking up these learning units with fun activities after each, help to reinforce what has been learned as well as to give students a breather and a change of focus. Inside each learning unit, pupils build up systematically from individual letters to full words and sentences. One of the most original ideas I have seen so far is the separation of "sight reading" material from "decoding material" in a natural and integrative manner. This is done by the program reading the "sight" words in a sentence, while the students read the "decoding" words. This allows the student to focus on the decoding task while allowing him to learn the site words passively through two senses seeing and hearing.

2. The voice recognition feature, though not perfect, does work remarkably well. It's state of the art and has a very fast and easy input method. You don't have to spend hours getting the computer to recognize your voice. Kids are thrilled at being able to "talk" to the computer and get feedback as to whether their speech is understandable or in need of improvement.

3. The Progress Report, which allows the user or his tutor to track his progress is transparent and clear. It is easy to see how the units are organized and where the user stands. It's a simple matter to print it out and this feature is very important when working with parents who are not computer knowledgeable.
